Chennai: Every day, Mobu 72 years old must travel from Perumbakkam to a shoestress shop in Kodambakkam.
While he had traveled for years, the pandemic brought with a problem.
“Even when the limit subsides, I have to walk far away so that I can produce quite a lot.
Or ask the elevator from people who pass,” he said.
But today, he does not have to depend on public transportation or goodwill strangers to start working.
WCCG Cyclist Chennai, who recognized his distress, gave him a cycle under their initiative project annamalai.
The project, launched a year ago, aims to distribute cycles to the shortcomings so they can go easily in the city.
“When there is no public transportation during locking, many people do not have other ways to find it difficult to travel,” said Divagaran T, member of the founder of the group.
The group has distributed nine cycles so far and are now looking for donors to maintain initiatives.
“Even though we might not pay attention to them on the road, many people still use cycles to get around.” “We named it after the film Rajini ‘Annamalai’, where the bike humbly gave him happiness even after he got up from cloth to wealth,” Diviaran said.
In July this year, they distributed nine bicycles as part of their nine-year anniversary to people who needed it, such as helping domestic, who often walked from home to home.
“It not only made their trip easier but also helped them save the money they spent for it,” Diviaran said.
Ambika Ramesh, a recipient who worked as a domestic aid in Colathur, said the cycle helped him save time.
“Previously, I had to walk to work and come back but now I cycled,” said the 38-year-old player.
With the support of the cycling community in Chennai, this initiative is now being upgraded.
“We have a donor recipient model.
Donors can sponsor new cycles or donate used.
People can refer beneficiaries and their needs will be examined and verified by our volunteer team,” Diviaran said.
He added that they had more requests and would immediately give 11 more bicycles.
