New Delhi: The government will work with the committee of experts founded by the Supreme Court to investigate the accusations of reconnaissance using controversial Pegasus software, Ashwini Communication Minister Vaishnaw said on Thursday.
Speaking at now Summit 2021, he said that the government would provide infrastructure, labor, laboratory facilities, and information needed by the committee to complete the probe.
In social media regulations, the minister said that while the internet giant has given people the opportunity to express themselves freely, at the same time, the abuse of technology has placed “a big burden of thinking” where it must be regulations.
The minister said that there was a balance between privacy and social responsibility.
“I would say, our policy must have our cultural roots, our needs, our reality in focus when we do policies,” he said, adding that the element of “trust” must come on social media.
The government’s approach is not to censor but to enable self-rules while empowering social media users.
“There must be the first, element of self-rules.
Self rules are the first step, the second is the user himself out and regulates.
The third is the government must enter.
So, our way of structured social media and our intermediary, basically placing consumers ahead,” he said.
On the problem alleged the use of spyware Pegasus Israel for targeted supervision in India, Vaishnaw said the government “fully respected” the direction of the Supreme Court.
The committee formed by the Supreme Court has a “star technical expert”, he said, adding that the government will provide complete cooperation to this committee in terms of infrastructure, labor, laboratory facilities, and in terms of information needed.
“We are really clean about this, so we don’t need to worry about what will come out of this report,” he said.
Questions about whether there are no government agents who have bought Pegasus, said Vaishnaw, “I have explicitly said in parliament that whatever we do, exactly in the legal framework.
