WASHINGTON: The US government realized the report that Belarus had closed its border with neighboring Ukraine, said a senior administrative official on Friday, swore that Washington would continue to hold President Alexashenko’s government responsible for his actions.
“It seems that the Lukashenko regime once again tried to divert attention from his oppression campaign against his people,” the official said.
“We will continue to stand with a trigger and hold the regime.” Lukashenko on Friday ordered the full closure of the country’s borders with Ukraine, trying to block what he called arms flow to a coup gang detected by his security services, according to the Belta state news agency.
Washington this week prohibited ticket sales for air travel to and from Belarus, acting after Minsk forced Ryanair flights to land and arrest a dissident journalist on board.
It was not immediately clear what might be taken in response to strong Lukashenko’s hard action against the months of pro-democracy protests for alleged election of August 2020.
The old ruler denied election fraud.
