WASHINGTON: The Defense Department said the US military commander at Kabul Airport was associated with Taliban leaders when they coordinate efforts to evacuate US citizens and Afghan ally.
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters on the briefing on Tuesday that the interaction needed with the Taliban leaders would continue when the US evacuated people.
He said there was no new enemy meeting with Taliban fighters at the airport.
Asked whether the US commander had an agreement with the Taliban for a safe trip to the Afghan allied airport and other people waiting for the evacuation, Kirby said “there was an interaction at the airport, by our commander, with Taliban leaders’ outside the airport.
Officials hope the evacuation rate will increase so that as many as 9,000 people can be removed from the country every day.
After sweeping them to Kabul on Sundays and takeover of the country, Taliban fighters kept the entry point and the Kabul airport gate.
