New Delhi: The Ministry of India Meteorology (IMD) is looking for input and observation of the general public to make its forecast stronger.
In the link posted on the main and regional sites, IMD has asked people to submit information about different weather phenomena ranging from rain, rain storms, lightning, dust storms, and strong winds (more than 62 kmpj) that have occurred in their environment .
The public has been asked for weather phenomena, intensity and damage due to measuring the impact in places where IMD observatories and weather stations do not exist.
IMD officials said training for Crowdsource input began six months ago with more than 8,500 observations had been collected so far from all over the country.
Of this amount, almost 50% of observations are related to rain.
Kuldeep Srivastava, Head of the Regional Met Office in Delhi, said that data so far helped them improve their own accuracy in estimating weather related events.
Data is also collected to measure future events.
“It often happens that light rainfall is expected to occur, but if the main station is like Safdarjung, Palam, Aya Nagar, Ridge or Lodhi, not recording rainfall, it is believed that there is no rain in the whole city.
However, it might rain into moderate moderation.
happens in some parts where there is no station or observatory, “Srivastava added.
Further weather players stated that this would help them identify which areas recorded rainfall.
“Radar images can be checked to identify which cloud movements or formations can be contributed to the rain in the area.
This will increase the accuracy of forecasting and we can learn from the data provided to us,” said Srivastava, adding that short duration events such as hailstorm or wind Gusty can specifically be identified in this way.
“There are parts where people can report hail, Gusty winds and even lightning, along with damage that might occur.
If the main observatory does not record hailstorm activities, the user’s input will help us know that there is an ice rain with rain.
Pretty often, hail Melting in seconds, so that the input of people can be useful, “said Srivastava, adding that the outside of Delhi will get better coverage.
The data is currently being collected through a link https://city.imd.gov.in/citywx/crowd/enter_th_datag.php.
People can make observations about weather phenomena and damage to reports, including fallen trees, damage to buildings, livestock, plants or telephone poles and floods, including events.
