Ahmedabad: Police Sabarmati Riverfront (East) has found a body of a 21-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman, with hands bound, floating on the river near Shahpur.
The police found the corpse on Saturday night.
Police said that the couple, Rakesh Datania and Gungun Datania, were Shahpur’s residents and had committed suicide.
The couple was desperate because they were worried that their families would not let them live together, the police said.
On the other hand, their families say they are willing to get married and start talking about their marriage after they are lost on November 10.
A police officer said, “Rakesh and Gungun are in a relationship for about a year but they do not realize the family.” The officer added: “When they express their relationship with their families, they experienced some resistance.
The family seems to be looking for time to think about it.
“But the couple did not accept their family’s approach and decided to escape from their home.
“They may be afraid that their family members will punish them and they will slander in the community,” the officer said.
“So they jump into the river and commit suicide.” Introduction Investigations show that the couple may have died about three days before their bodies were found.
“They left their homes on November 10 and on the same day they might commit suicide by jumping into the river,” the officer said.
He said that their family members tried to contact them, but their cellphone was turned off.
“The family members they told us that they planned to arrange their marriage immediately and tried to find them,” the police said.
The police have registered cases of unintentional deaths and have started an investigation.
