New Delhi: Maharashtra and southern countries have recorded more Covid-19 cases than the rest of India since the first wave of last year.
But the difference in cases between North and South may be far today than in other periods.
On the week ended on Sundays, Maharashtra and five southern countries, along with UT from Puducherry, together recorded almost 2.2 lakh new cases.
Kerala alone contributed more than 1.7 lakh new infections, followed by Tamil Nadu (11,161) and Andhra Pradesh (8,660).
In sharp contrast, cumulative cases are calculated in 14 state and North and Central India uteng (other than Maharashtra and Goa) during this period only 3,687 – almost 1.6% of the number reported in Maharashtra and South.
These countries / UTS include J & K, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.
The region includes five countries that reported the lowest number of new cases in this country last week.
Rajasthan led the list with only 61 new infections detected last week.

Nine states in the East and Northeast India (including Bengal and Odisha) together contributed nearly 21,000 new cases.
Meanwhile, last week, while Kerala reported a 16.4% decline in Covid cases, infection rose in four states and UTS among those who reported at least 500 weekly cases.
This is Bengal, which posted a surge in 6.9% infection, Tamil Nadu (3%), Mizoram (12.7%) and J & K (21.7%).
Mizoram Tiny recorded more than 7,000 fresh cases, the highest count of 5th after Kerala (1.7 lakh), Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
This is the third consecutive week in Mizoram.
On Monday, India recorded 24,369 new cases of Coronavirus, with a count in Kerala fell to 15058.
There are 218 new deaths of viruses.
Detecting cases fell sharply every Monday due to lower testing and lack of staff during the weekend.
