Kolkata: The state government has decided to release 63 inmates of life with premature basis to reduce congestion in prison during the ongoing pandemic.
The state government has made this decision considering the threat of the third wave.
Recently, the State sentence review board has recommended the release of life inmates who have good behavior.
The Board is led by the Secretary of the House and the Secretary of the Board is a Judicial Secretary.
Senior police officers Kolkata and Bengal along with ADG (prison) are council members.
All of these inmates have completed 14 years in prison, said an official.
Among 63 live inmates, 61 men and two are women.
Females with more than 55 years and men who are more than 60 years old are considered for liberation.
An official said that inmates were released under the part 432 CRPC because the state government had the power to suspend or send punishment of inmates and let them release prematurely.
ADG (prison) Peelyush Pandey said they were released by considering the age of inmates and their behavior in prison.
Previously, in May 2020, around 3,000 inmates were released on guarantees or parole by the state government to reduce prison.
