Kolkata: There was a surge in the number of marriages in the city starting in the second week of July after many couples canceled their wedding in May and June after the second wave of Covid-19 crashed and resulted in limiting assembly of the assembly of people, market hours and vehicle movements.
According to the data available with the government, more than 36,000 marriages have been registered since the last six weeks.
This month alone, the government has published 9,946 wedding certificates to date.
An official showed this until August 15 after the goose period began when marriage did not occur according to Hindu Customs.
Among Muslims there were also several marriages in the city before August 10 when Muharram began.
Many couples, who have rescheduled their marriage because of the limitation of the second wave or someone in an infected family, had gone ahead and tied the knot.
Agarwal Vedika is scheduled to marry Rohit Agarwal on July 1 this year but both families decide to delay marriage because of restrictions.
The couple finally tied the knot on July 15.
“All preparations were made and even the place was booked for July 1 when restrictions came into force.
After waiting a few days when we felt that restrictions could continue for a few more days our family decided to delay marriage.
Finally, we tied the knot on July 15 with very little Family members present and follow all Covid norms.
Even though we do not have more than 50 guests, we are happy to marry people who are close and loved, “Vedika said, a cake chef by the profession.
Many couples have delayed their marriage as one of them or both are infected.
“We stayed in for a very basic ceremony on June 27 when we were tested positive in a week each other.
We had to delay the marriage.
We finally got married on August 2 when our place was initially ordered,” said Soham Roy, a resident of Sreebhumi near Lake Town.
Marriage applicants registered in the government said they had suggested several marriages a day.
“Marriage began to occur since the second week of July and at the end of the month, we rushed to several places to register marriage,” said Jayanta Kumar Mitra, Secretary General of the organization of the Bengal marriage officer.
“This is a good mix of those who have delayed their marriage because of the second wave and even some who have set their marriage, afraid of the third wave and subsequent restrictions,” he added.
