Kolkata: Railways India has registered a historic logo “toy train” iconic from Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) internationally as its intellectual property (IP), more than two decades after DHR was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO.
Whereas DHR plans to monetize the logo by using it in souvenirs, every use of logos anywhere in the world, from now on, requires permission and payment of fees.
DHR was declared a world heritage site on December 5, 1999 by UNESCO.
Toy train services were built between 1879 and 1881, and the length was around 88 km.

Before registering to register a logo, DHR worked hard to recover original artwork on the station wall.
“We mine archives to take the oldest artwork available,” said Director of DHR A K Mishra, added that some station buildings have the original original logo.
“Original documents and other items are taken.

It was then sent to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a special UN agent based in Geneva, Switzerland.
Documentation is made in accordance with the procedure specified in the Wienna WIPO classification.
There was a six-month window to register against claims, after claims the Indian government would receive international approval.
