Kolkata: Ahead of the celebration, the Bengali government has renewed the Covid warrior contract – migrant workers from Bengal who returned home for 2020 Lockital and worked at Covid Hospital.
Their contract ended on August 31, leaving them without working.
Their contract renewal now makes them relieved.
On Thursday, the government renewed a 400 contract of such migrant workers, mostly from Murshidabad.
“I became unemployed after our contract ended.
Now, we will return to our feet.
It brings us a lot towards Bengal’s biggest festival,” said Khudu Shiekh, a Mason from Shaktipur who had returned from Mumbai last year.
The Government of Mamata Banerjee has established the Covid Warriors club to rehabilitate migrant workers such as Shiekh.
After short training, they were sent to Covid Hospital to help doctors and nurses.
“Covid warriors help by feeding, caring for cleanliness and keeping eyes in patients who are alert.
We are glad they will return to Ward,” said Infectious Disease & Buyaghata General Hospital (ID & BG) Medical Supervisory and Deputy Principal of Asis Manna.
ID Hospital, Medical College Hospital and Bangur TN Hospital are the first where migrant workers are deployed.
Some, who have studied until higher and secondary schools, are trained by doctors in taking blood pressure, monitoring oxygen saturation, and installing high flow nose canula.
During a surge, they have made extra efforts and hours in patient care.
So, when their contract ended on August 31, the doctor at Id Hospital urged the hospital authority to appeal to the Ministry of Health to return it.
