Chennai: “What losses will learn Hindi do? Many lose the opportunity to get the work of the central government without knowing Hindi,” said Madras High Court on Monday.
The first bench from the acting chairman of Judge Munishwar Nath Bhandari and Justice P D Audikesavalu made observations while hearing public interest petitions seeking the implementation of the 2020 National Education Policy (NEP) in Tamil Nadu.
Responding to his observations, said Advokat TN R Shunmugasundam said, “The Tamil Nadu government follows a two-language policy and not a three-language policy because it will burden students.” In addition, no one was stopped from learning Hindi in the state.
“There are institutions like Hindi Prachar Sabha where someone can learn Hindi,” he added.
For this, the court said, “learning is different from teaching”.
The court then acknowledged the request was transferred by Arjunan Elayaraja from Cuddalore and directed the country to respond within four weeks.
‘Just learning Mother’s language will not help’ According to the Petitioner, learning only someone’s mother’s language will not help.
Language must go along with other Indian, especially Hindi and Sanskrit, he said.
“…
The authorities must make a joint effort in implementing NE and also in upholding the constitutional mandate and the direction of the Supreme Court,” the Petitioner said.
Someone must shudder for what will be a consequence if every country will stand like Tamil Nadu, he added.
Actually, Nep does not force Hindi or Sanskrit.
It only offers many languages and introduces three-language policies with emphasis on mother tongue, he said.
“But given the constitutional mandate and the assessment of the State Supreme Court must make Hindi and possibly, Sanskrit optional,” the claimed applicant said.
