In March 1918, Mahatma Gandhi held Kheda Satyagraha, one of the first, in Gujarat when the government collected a tax of 23% when the area was hit by hunger, cholera and plague.
Gandhi leads peaceful protests and convinced farmers not to pay taxes, which are filled with severe British responses to seize land and property.
But the movement ultimately produces results – taxes removed and all properties are confiscated.
In this letter to the editor published at the Times of India, Gandhi argued on the tax on behalf of the Kheda farmers.
