White elephant? Plan BMC RS 20 Crore Skywalk in Kurla

Mumbai: Even when it dismantled several dilapidated Skywalk throughout the city, the city’s corporation who lacked money planned to build a highway as high as Rs 20 Crore in Kurla (W).
On Wednesday, BMC administration was submitted before the Standing Civic Proposal Committee to build a 300m wide skywalk, 4.3 m wide from the Taximen Colony to Shrikrishna Chowk.
The Skywalk TimesVeviews in Mumbai have been declared dilapidated and has been demolished.
Many of them still stand are almost not used by pedestrians.
Should BMC spend a large amount of money to build a known skywalk to turn into white elephants? According to citizenship officials, representatives of the elected regions have demanded that pedestrian and comfort safety, Skywalk is needed by the area-hit by traffic congestion.
“Skywalk proposed in Kurla, which will be built using reinforced cement concrete and steel, will have two escalators so that people do not have to climb the stairs,” said a citizenship official.
“We will spend around Rs 50 Lakh to remove the underground utility to establish a skywalk, which is expected to be ready in 15 months.” BMC has paid the RS 28 Lakh consultant to design a skywalk and suggest technical details, the official was added.
Between 2008 and 2012, MMRDA built 23 skywalk in Mumbai for an estimated RS 700 Crore and spent around RS 2.5 Crore on their maintenance.
Skywalk is then submitted to BMC for maintenance.
Then, the Civic body established several higher trails in the city.
According to experts, Skywalks must last for more than 50 years, but some existing structures have become dilapidated and some must even be closed for pedestrians.
Many of them still stand considered white elephants; While they are rarely used, encroachment, and unauthorized parking has appeared under this structure.
BMC recently held a reconstruction of the first Skywalk Arm Mumbai in Bandra (e) quoted financial constraints.
Skywalk 1.3km was declared unsafe for pedestrians and closed in 2019.
BMC then associated with VJTI experts to conduct a structural audit of all skywalks in Mumbai.
Dahisar (w) Skywalk is also closed because it turns out it is not safe to use.
