Hyderabad: The rare case of white mushrooms or Aspergillus which forms abscesses in the brain after Covid-19 infection has been reported from the city.
Although inflammation (granuloma) the brain by Aspergillus is normal, doctors rarely find cases of white mushrooms forming abscesses.
This is very rare in Covid-19 patients.
Patients from the old city have recovered from Covid-19 in May this year and post-recovery developing limb weakness and difficulty speaking.
Brain scanning reveals formations such as lumps that do not subside after treatment.
In operations it was found that white fungi had formed an abscess in the brain.
Non-diabetes patients but have high blood pressure.
“This case is unique because there are abscesses formed by white mushrooms in the brain.
Infection is post-recovery from Covid-19.
In general, fungal infections in Covid-19 patients are found if they suffer from diabetes.
Non-diabetes patients.
Sinus Paranasal clearly shows that White mushrooms have not entered the brain through the nose unlike black mushrooms, “said Dr.
Rangadham, senior nerve, sunshine hospital, Gachibowli.
Dr.
Ranganadham, who conducted an operation, said the patient complained of limb weakness and difficulties in speaking on the sixth day of hospitalization for Covid-19 when the second wave was at its peak.
MRI brains reveal large lesions on the left along with two small lesions in different areas.
Initially, patients were treated because of hematoma, sequalae covid-19 which was possible.
“When the patient becomes further symptomatic, in the course of MRI repeat time with contrast it shows that lesions increase the size of a solid and clear margin.
Smaller lesions remain unchanged.
When operated, we find abscesses that are well-stated that contain soft necrotic materials, Separate from the normal brain, “said Dr.
Ranganadham to Ti.
He said the pathological analysis of abscess showed that it was a case of white fungal infection, technically called aspergillosis.
He said aspergillosis the central nervous system was the result of the invasion of blood vessels with white mushrooms.
Mushrooms can enter the brain both through inhalation spores to the lungs from where they enter the bloodstream, or directly through the nose to the brain.
