Geneva: The official said the agency’s assessment of Covaxin Made-in-India was in the advanced stage and the decision on emergency authorization for Bharat Biotech vaccine is probably in mid-September.
Covaxin still has to be authorized by Western authorities.
A top vaccine official in the World Health Organization said that the agency expects to make decisions next month in emergency authorization for Indian-made Covid-19 vaccine made by Bharat Biotech, a shot that has not been authorized by any Western regulatory authority.
Hansel Mariangela Simao, an assistant Director General of WHO for the vaccine, said the assessment of the United Nations Health Agency about Bharat Biotech vaccine “quite advanced” and officials hoped for the decision in mid-September.
Simao said who also considered the other vaccine version that has been licensed by the agency, including those made by Sinopharm.
He hopes they will begin to evaluate the vaccine made by Sanofi Pasteur and Novavaks in September.
“There are many, many vaccines in the final stage of the pipe,” said Simao.
Last week, US Novavaks makers said they would prioritize seeking authorization in developing countries and from whom before getting green lights in the US and the European Union.
