CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday declared that it would not permit the Karnataka government’s Mekedatu dam program throughout the river Cauvery near the inter-state border. In a formal announcement, water resources ministry S Duraimurugan stated the authorities would consult legal guides on this issue and take suitable actions. “The Tamil Nadu government won’t ever enable the building of Mekedatu dam intended by the Karnataka authorities throughout the river Cauvery,” the ministry stated. The minister’s comments came in the aftermath of this National Green Tribunal taking suo motu cognizance of a Times of India report published on April 15, alleging that some measures were being accepted and materials were accumulated close to the proposed project region. The tribunal comprised a four-member committee of the Union environment ministry, Cauvery Water Management Authority, Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Limited and woods division of Karnataka authorities to scrutinize the region in question and also submit an application in addition to actions taken report, even if there wasn’t any breach. Duraimurugan reported the state authorities had filed a petition at the Supreme Court at November 2018, trying to remain of the consent given from the Central Water Commission into Karnataka government to proceed with the preparation of detailed project report and the latter out of moving further with the preparation of DPR. “The Tamil Nadu government’s contempt petitions from the project evaluation directorate of Central Water Commission and the secretary of Karnataka water sources division at December 2018 are pending at the Supreme Court,” Duraimurugan stated. In its 25th meeting in July 2019an expert evaluation board for river valley along with climbing projects of the Union environment ministry didn’t grant provisions with reference to Karnataka administration’s job, following controversy from Tamil Nadu authorities. The program was not taken up for debate during the 3 meetings from the Cauvery Water Management Authority following the Tamil Nadu government whined, Duraimurugan stated.
