New Delhi: Commander Wing Abhinandan Varthaman, who was awarded the VIR Chakra to shoot Pakistani F-16 fighters in February 2019 before the MIG-21 was shot down and he was held captive for three days in Pakistan, it was approved for the next rank from the group captain at IAF.
Varthaman will take the group captain (equivalent to a colonel in the Army) in the coming days depending on vacancy.
“This is a routine promotion, along with his friends who have made a value after the service needed,” said an officer on Wednesday.
