Hyderabad: New drug compounds can help in the treatment of disturbing skin diseases, psoriasis, the first team of researchers from the University of Hyderabad (UOH) and Dr.
Reddy’s Institute of Life Sciences said on Wednesday.
While the invention has been given Indian patents, researchers have submitted international patents and said the discovery can provide assistance to patients from this recurrent skin disease.
Psoriasis, which is marked by red patches with silvery scales on various parts of the body, always remains a puzzle for medical and health scientists.
Various theories have been proposed for the onset of disease, but nothing has so far provided conclusive evidence about what triggers problems.
Also, no drug is known to cure the problem.
However, psoriasis is not contagious.
In this background, the discovery of drug molecules for psoriasis treatment of getting significance.
The research team consisted of Prof.
P Reddanna, Dr.
Kumar Reddy and Dr.
Nooruddin Khan from Uoh and Harshavardhan Bhuctar, Sharda Shukla and Prof.
Manojit, friend of Dr.
Reddy Biological Sciences.
This discovery can also help in finding drugs for other major health problems such as arthritis, coronary heart disease, allergies, asthma, certain forms of cancer and even Alzheimer’s disease.
“Recognized psoriasis features and other proliferative dermatosis (skin disease) are accumulated on the skin of aracidonic acid metabolites which are unusually called 12r-hete, which is a product of an enzyme known as 12r-lipoxygenase or 12-R-LOX.
Research uses microarray ( Lab tools that detect a large number of genes simultaneously) in humans reveal that pathologically expressed 12r-loves are expressed pathologically during psoriasis and other proliferative skin dermatosis, “the research study added that 12R-LOX formed a potential target of proliferative skin disorders, including psoriasis.
The research team validated 12R-LOX as a target for the development of anti-psoriasis drugs through a series of experiments.
And this discovery is the result of a collaborative project between the two institutions funded jointly by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Dr.
Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd., researchers added.
