Ludhiana: A 13-year-old karate player has brought victory to the city by winning two gold medals in the National Championship which has just been held in Kolkata.
In October this year, Shajbir Singh Gill has won silver and gold at the State Championship held in Ludhiana.
Shajbir, son of Parlambir Singh Gill and Gurpreet Entrepreneur Kaur, won the first gold in ordinary karate (Kumite) in the 13-year category (plus weighing 45-kg) by defeating players from West Bengal and he also won the word category where several players participated.
The National Championship was organized by the Federation of All India Seishinkai Shito-Ryu Karate in Kolkata on 17 and December 18, where players from 19 countries participated.
“It is a great feeling to win two gold medals at a national event.
I have begun to prepare for the international championship that will be held next year,” said class VIII students from private schools in October.
Asked why he chose Karate as the main sport, Shajbir said he liked the ‘Karate Kid’ movie and was interested in the game and he felt great when some people called him ‘Kid Kid’.
“I started karate when I was three years old.
At first I got training at school, but then a coach trained me at home.
I took advanced training from the Premjit Sen and his team members, Deepak Kumar and Parkash,” he said by winning gold in the karate championship The national held in Goa in 2013, in addition to winning awards in America in July in the same year when he secured fourth place in the US Open from the Karate Tournament.
He has won a medal in various competitions, such as a silver medal in Commonwealth games in December 2019.
He has won a medal in five world championships until now.
