WMO warns of extreme weather events, natural disasters

Geneva: Taal Petteri, Head of the Geneva-Based World Meteorology Organization (WMO), said extreme weather events and natural disasters will continue to increase, adding climate change is the root causes of rain storms and deadly floods destroying Europe.
Speaking exclusively to the Xinhua news agency on Monday, Talas said: “We always have extreme weather events, but because of climate change, we have started to see them more often and they are more intense.” Without climate change, we will not do so observe high temperatures in the western part of Canada and the US, so it’s a clear indication of climate change.
“At the same time, a devastating flash flood because heavy rain has swept several Western European countries in the past few days, killing more than 100 people and causing great damage.
Asked about whether he expects more natural disasters for the next few years, Talas said: “Climate change will occur over the next few decades.
If we succeed with climate mitigation, we can stop this negative trend in the 2060s.
“Until then we will see the number of increased natural disasters and increased quantities of extreme weather types and also more human losses and more economic losses than before.” That means we must also adapt to climate change, most importantly.
The problem is to reduce climate change, to stop using fossil fuels and also pay attention to our diet.
“Worldwide countries have promised to reach the global peak of greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible and to reach the world of neutral climate in the middle.
Century.
Talas emphasizes that there is no region in the world that is safe from the negative impact of extreme weather events and natural disasters .
He also warned the number of storm records in the Caribbean last year, Super Typhoons in Asia, and cyclones hit the Pacific Islands and the southern part of Africa.
“The key is that we have to start acting now, we cannot wait for the coming decades,” Secretary General WMO.
“We must reduce the number of fossil fuels, especially.
We must get rid of coal-fueled energy production, we must change our transportation system to be more based on electric vehicles and biofuels.
“In the housing we have to cool our house by using a geothermal heat pump, and in our diet, we must reduce the number of red meat,” Talas added that there was no more time to be destroyed to overcome global warming.
WMO, a UN special agent, has a member of 193 states and regions and was founded in 1950.
