Chennai: A 20-year-old student on Monday jumped to his death from the fifth floor of a private engineering college in Thandalam near Sripumbudur.
Police said Abitha from Ariyalur Regency had previously tried to end his life in his dorm room a few days ago.
However, fellow students save him and the second year of students were treated at a private hospital.
He returned to college on Monday to collect a number of things because the college authorities asked his parents to take him home.
But Abitha fell from the fifth floor as a fellow student and his parents, who arrived to pick him up, watch horror.
His father Thangakumar worked in a cement factory in Ariyalur and his family initially came from Karnataka.
Abitha, who attended the online class through a pandemic-induced locker, recently returned to campus.
The police quoted students and administrators said he looked depressed lately.
Lecture officials tried to advise him but it didn’t work.
They then told the student parents that he seemed to be under pressure and on Monday suggested that they take him home.
Suddenly, Abitha ran to the fifth floor and ended her life.
He rushed to the nearest hospital where the doctor said he was taken dead on arrival.
Sripipumbudur police sent the body to the Sriperumbudur government hospital for autopsy.
Cases have been registered and active investigations.
