Coimbatore: A 36-year-old woman has been arrested for taking a gold chain weighing 7.25 sovereign from the shop owner on the 7th extension at Rathinapuri here on Friday night after spraying insecticides on his face.
Police Rathinapuri identified the defendant as Thavamani alias Deivanathi, a native resident of Attukulam Village near Melur in Madurai district.
According to an investigative officer, Thavamani visited the shop on Dehar bought several prizes.
“He chose a gift and asked the shop owner, Selvarani 57 years old, to wrap the same.
When he wrapped the gift, he sprayed the insecticide on his face and seized the golden chain.” Selvarani tried to catch the woman, but he managed to escape.
“He raised his alarm and his neighbor pursued Thavamani and arrested him.
They then handed it to us,” the officer said.
The police have restored the stolen chain of Thavamani, which is produced before judge justice on Saturday.
He was then returned in Judicial custody.
Meanwhile, the CCTV footage of the incident became a viral on social media on Saturday.
Police said Thavamani was involved in several crimes in the district and other parts of the country.
