Paris: The world records more than two million Coronavirus cases every day between January 1 and 7 with double numbers in 10 days, the AFP calculation shows on Saturday.
On average 2.106,118 new daily infections were reported for a period of seven days, shortly after the one million threshold was passed on Sunday 23-29 December 2021.
The new global case number has surged 270 percent since very infectious Omicron variants found in South Africa at the end of November.
But the death associated with Covid was at the lowest level since October 2020, with an average of 6,237 per day recorded in the period between January 1 and 7.
Although initial studies showed that Omicron caused a disease that was less severe, experts had warned the volume of cases triggered .
Strains can still go beyond the health system.
Countries around the world have reintroduced restrictions and improving vaccination programs in an effort to stem the spread of the virus.
Europe, as well as the United States and Canada, is a world infection hotspot.
The two regions each represented 49 percent and 33 percent of the global Covid cases in the past week.
Covid cases skyrocketed 47 percent in Europe and 76 percent in the United States and Canada compared to the previous week.
In the same period, Covid infection increased by 224 percent in Oceania, 148 percent in Latin America and the Caribbean, 116 percent in the Middle East and 145 percent in Asia.
The number of new cases reported in Africa remained stable but, as elsewhere, was at the highest level since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020.
The figures were based on official statistics produced by the National Health Authority.
Significant proportions of cases that are less severe or asymptomatic are not detected even though the testing regime is intensive since the beginning of the pandemic.
The testing policy also varies from one country to another.
Considering the excess mortality associated with Covid-19, the World Health Organization estimates the victims of death as a whole can be two to three times higher.
