KOLKATA: For the last two times, environmentalists and ecologists have alerted the civil system to place reinforcements against exposed trees to protect them against the potential onslaught of this cyclonic storm that may pass through town. Cyclone Yaas reside updatesThe memories of a large scale devastation of greenery from Amphan a year ago are new in green activists’ heads. “For the past few times, we kept attractive to Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) and Public Works Department (PWD) to set up guards such as full-grown leaning trees in order that they do not get uprooted. TimesViewThe significance of trees cannot be stressed too far. Similar exercises ought to be taken in more ordinary times as well.In some instances, they did exactly what we needed, but in a few instances, they didn’t react. We’ve dropped a large variety of trees throughout Amphan. There’s barely any settlement against missing greenery of this city whose contamination level is increasing,” explained Somendra Mohan Ghosh, a green activist. Sumita Banerjee, also a self-proclaimed guardian of Rabindra Sarobar, is haunted with the devastation wrecked by Amphan this past calendar year. “Rabindra Sarobar dropped at least 15 percent of its own large trees. I beg Yaas spares the metro this moment. After the town’s Covid patients have been gasping for breath, then we have to recall these trees because our reliable oxygen generators,” she explained. Ghosh has recognized over 50 such trees across Southern Avenue and Sarat Bose Road which are vulnerable to powerful cyclonic storms. “A few green NGOs have attempted to provide a tree service by linking into a wall hook using a rope. However, I wonder whether those principles could maintain the gusts,” explained Sudipto Bhattacharya of Saviours along with Friends of Environment. Bhattacharya completed similar exercises in the northwestern area of town. “I carefully coordinated by civic bodies to execute trimming that trees do not get toppled from the end. More than 16,000 full-grown trees have been annexed by Amphan. For survival, then a person demands 740kg of oxygen per year. This equates into six-seven trees each individual. With this logic, the Kolkata’s inhabitants of 1.5 crore requires over 10 crore trees that are senile. However, the town has some lakh,” said Bhattacharya. 1 full-grown shrub, in an average, generates 1,000kg of oxygen and absorbs 22kg of carbon dioxide. “In town, trees are exposed since we do not permit them to grow right. Primarily, over-concretization doesn’t enable the main programs to move deeper. A poor root system leaves trees exposed to gusts of wind. Second, the overhead cables and billboards influence direct growth. The minute a shrub becomes twisted, its becoming 20 times longer exposed to storms,” explained Bonani Kakkar of People United for Better Living in Calcutta (PUBLIC).
