Zomato introduces a slight change in the application to reduce plastic waste.
CEO of Zomato Deepah Goyal announces that the default option that automatically asks for feeding tools from the restaurant will now be canceled.
If you need a cutlery such as plastic straws, napkins, spoons, etc.
then you have to choose your own option.
If you pass it, then your food will be sent without a cutlery.
Previously, by default users got a free cutlery with their food orders unless they chose it.
“We surveyed thousands of our customers, and 90% + of them said that they didn’t really need plastic cutlery with their orders.
Given this, we decided to change the default mode for tableware – customers now have to explicitly ask for tableware.
, tissue, and straws, if they need it.
It’s now ‘opt-in’ instead of ‘opt-out’, “Zomato said in a blog post.
According to goyal, “this small change can help save up to 5,000 kilos of plastic in a day.” In the @Zomato application, customers can always pass the cutlery with their orders.

“This change will also help our restaurant partners save ₹ 2-5 (~ 0.5-1% of the order value) on each order forward.
We urge all our restaurant partners to start channeling this cost savings to start the transition to non-packaging plastic, “he added.
Zomato is said to have launched the opt-in feature to 50% of its customers.
This will be launched to all customers for the next three to four weeks.
