Dhaka: Police have arrested 13 more suspects, including local scholars, for scattering of violence recently against the minority Hindu community during the Puja Durga celebration in Bangladesh, according to media reports on Monday.
Acting on the tip-off, the police arrested Mamun Mondal, who was an Islamic activist Chhatra Shibir, Affiliate Students of Jamaat-e-Islami, and Omar Faruk, a local scholar, on Sundays from various locations.
“Mamun was actively involved with Chhatra Shibir since 2012.
Then, he lives in Malaysia for some time.
Omar Faruk has become a priest at the Pirganj South Bus Stand Mosque,” said a police officer.
Massa who was angry on October 17 which damaged 66 houses and burned at least 20 Hindu houses in Rangpur District Pirganj Upazila for alleged online posts in the midst of protests by the minority community against the incident of the Puja Durga celebration.
Piranjan Police-in-Charge Suresh Chandra said that mamun “sprinkled gasoline and light fire” on night violence.
According to a report in Dhaka Tribune, the Duo has recognized the accusation during the initial interrogation.
So far the police have arrested 68 people, including the key suspect of Shaatal Mandal, in connection with violence.
Mandal claimed that it was his Facebook post that led to violence in Rangpur on October 17.
Meanwhile, the police have arrested 11 more people, including the leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, in connection with violence against the Hindu community on October 15, the report said BDNews24.com.
