Gurugram: Four people died to die allegedly after breathing toxic gases when cleaning Borewell in Nimka Village in Noah on Saturday.
The men, police said, had climbed Borewell to clean it after the villagers complained of the stench.
Four men – Jamshed, Sahid, Jakir and Yahaya – have been employed by a village resident, Hanif, to cleanse Borewell in his field.
Jamshed, who was first down, allegedly lost consciousness soon after.
Sahid, Jakir and Yahaya rose to examine it and they also became unconscious.
Hanif, who stood outside Borewell, lifted alarm and a group of farmers who worked on the nearest field rushed to help.
When farmers reached, Hanif too, loss of consciousness.
The villagers called for help and the four men were pulled out of the well.
They rushed to a civil hospital in Noah, where the doctor said they died on arrival.
Hanif, said the police, was undergoing hospital treatment.
Ajavir Singh, Station House Officer (SHO) from Bijhor, said all bodies have been sent for autopsy.
“We will surrender the body to families after autopsy is done,” Sho said, adding that no complaints had been proposed so far.
“There was confusion and commotion on the site.
The stench came from Borewell and people hesitated to apply for help.
Because of all this, rescue work was delayed,” said a village resident.
The villagers said they wanted Borewell cleaned, but did not have a feeling that poison gas could be trapped inside.
A recent government report found a high level of contamination in the country in Noah and said it was not suitable for drinking.
The report has found high levels of chloride, nitrate, manganese and calcium and also records the existence of lead and mercury, which can cause cancer.
About 78% of the district also has salted ground water, the report said.
