Paris: The fifth wave of Coronavirus infection in France increased at alarming level, the government reported Sunday, with new Daily Covid cases that were close to the past week.
On average seven days of new cases reached 17,153 on Saturday, up from 9,458 a week before, according to health authorities, increased 81 percent.
“The fifth wave starts with lightning speed,” said Gabrial Atlal Government spokesman to the media.
The latest seven-day increase was three times the average case recorded over the previous three weeks, showing acceleration of exponential infections.
For now the surge in infection has not caused a large wave of covid patients to hospitals, with the authorities connecting the limited number of intensive care patients to French high vaccination levels that appear very effective against the most dangerous covid forms.
On Saturday, the hospital reported a total of 7,974 covid patients in their care, with 1,333 of them in intensive care.
This is equally comparable to 6,500 and 1,000, a month before.
“There is a very strong increase in infection, but we also know that in France we have a very large vaccination cover,” he said.
