WASHINGTON: The US Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday completed the rules that will cut the use of strong climate heating gases commonly used in refrigerators and air conditioning by 85% over the next 15 years, a step that will help produce this greenhouse gas emissions decades .
This rule aims to remove the use of hydrofluorocarbon (HFCs) by 85% in various general equipment and conduct laws which are continued with bipartisan support at last year’s congress.
This will make the US in accordance with the Kigali amendment to the Montreal protocol, the global agreement to reduce the HFC that has not been approved by the US.
“It actually sends a signal to the whole world that we are all in climate change,” National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy told reporters on Tuesday night.
The rules come with under six weeks to go before the peak of the Pivotal climate in Glasgow.
President Joe Biden launched a few climate steps through executive action, while other key climate proposals depend on the budget passing through the congress and infrastructure bills.
McCarthy said he did not know when Biden would send amendments to the Senate for ratification.
EPA said the rule was one of the most “consequential” in terms of the climate impact.
Along with additional steps, it can reduce 4.5 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide-equivalent in 2050 – equal to almost three years of US electricity sector emissions at the 2019 level, according to white house facts.
EPA rules create the allocation of benefits and trade systems to reduce HFC and review more than a dozen petitions to limit the use of HFC in other applications.
The EPA and White Building also announced on Thursday that the government would take an inter-institutional approach to prevent HFC’s illegal trade, production, use and sales and prepare for law enforcement to punish legal violations.
