Kathmandu: Nepal’s newly appointed Foreign Minister Narayan Khadka said on Wednesday that he would work to maintain a friendly and balanced relationship with India and China and establish national consensus with political parties in terms of foreign relations.
Khadka, 72, was appointed as foreign minister on Wednesday.
President Bidya Devi Bhandari gave Khadka’s office oath and confidentiality at a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Shiter Niwas, in front of Prime Minister Sher Deuba.
Bhandari appointed Khadka Foreign Minister for Deuba’s recommendation.
Speaking with reporters after assuming the office on Wednesday afternoon, Khadka said he would work to ensure a very friendly, friendly, and balanced relationship with direct neighbors – India and China.
Arguing that foreign policy of a country is not specific to every particular political party, the leader of the Senior Congress Nepal said he would work to establish a national consensus with other political parties about the things of foreign relations, the Republica website reported.
He also said the problem of the Millennium Challenge Corporation compact agreement (MCC) will also be resolved by maintaining a larger national interests.
Under the $ 500 million MCC program, the US government will provide grant assistance which is mainly used to strengthen the Nepalese transmission line which will facilitate hydro-electricity exports to India in the near future and also improve the country road network.
Nepal and the United States signed the MCC Agreement in 2017.
MCC, however, has become a political problem that is largely debated in this country, with several parties to objections to it on the grounds that the US program is part of the Indo-Pacific strategy and its parliamentary ratification will oppose interests Nepal National.
Khadka said the agreement will be carefully reviewed in connection with some controversies that arise around it and the decision will be taken accordingly.
Khadka also announced plans to change the foreign ministry to become a more dynamic institution equipped with modern technology.
He said that the appointment of a new ambassador will begin after returning to Nepal from the UN General Assembly.
The Nepalese delegation led by Khadka will leave for New York to attend the 76th session of the UN General Assembly (UGA) held at the UN headquarters in New York on Wednesday.
“He is scheduled to discuss the general debate from the 76th UNGA under the theme of building resilience through hope to recover from Covid-19, rebuilding sustainably, responding to the needs of the planet, and revitalizing the United Nations, and revitalizing the United Nations,” said my Republic Republic.
He will also participate in the minister’s meeting on the sidelines of Unga and hold a bilateral meeting with his colleagues and UN officials.
Khadka, was the fifth minister who was appointed in the Deuba government, which was formed on July 13.
With the appointment of Khadka, there are now seven ministers in the government, including Deuba and one state minister.
Khadka has held a PhD in the economic field of a university in Pune.
Deuba has held a portfolio until now.
The post of foreign ministers has been empty for more than two months after the establishment of a new government led by Deuba.
He had served as an advisor at that time PM Krishna Prasad Bhattarai in the 1990s.
He is also the Minister of Urban Development in 2014.
