Guwahati: Congress Mla Sherman Ali Ahmed was arrested on charges of incitement for his “provocative” comment on the eviction of Darrang District Assam, said the police on Sunday.
Ahmed was arrested from a quarter of MLA in a split on Saturday and was taken to the Panbazar police station to be interrogated before being arrested, they said.
He is likely to be produced in court during the day, a police officer said.
The case below the IPC 124a section (incitement) was submitted against it, he said.
Some organizations, including All Assam Students (Aasu) and BJYM Wing BJP wing, filed a police complaint against the legislators on his remarks.
The State Congress has also issued a notice to him for the “communal provocative” statement in front of Bypoll in the state, and search for replies within three days.
Ahmed has made a statement while reacting to a statement by several leaders of the Ruler Alliance led by BJP that alleged seizure in the Sipajhar district of Darrang District “killed” eight people in 1983 during Assam’s agitation for six years.
Ahmed allegedly said that eight people who died in agitation 1983 were “not martyrs, but killers”, because they were involved in slaughtering people from the minority community of the Sipajhar area where Gorukhuti was located.
He said that “attack” at eight people was the action of “self defense” by the Muslim population of the area.
In his notification, Congress said, “As a member of parliament, your provocative comment in the media, undermined the old injuries of the Assam’s agitation incident of the past when people Assam Cross people suffered, really not sensitive and dissatisfied.” Partner of the State Ruler Alliance, Asom Gana Parishad, born from Agitation Assam, has held protests in various places, including Dibrugarh, Barpeta, Manggadoi, Dhemaji, Tezpur, Biswanath, Nalbari, Bongaigaon, and Morigaon, and Burnt Effigies, and Burnt Congress MLA.
Two people were killed in shooting police during the eviction of drives in Darrang last month in the middle of a massive protest.
More than 20 people were injured in riots.
