Yadgir: Furious that a woman rejected the ightur, a 25-year-old man poured gasoline and burned it outside his home in Shorapur Taluk Yadgir Monday night.
The woman gave up to burn at Kalaburagi hospital on Tuesday.
The police said the defendant, Gangappa, had followed the 23-year-old woman even after marriage.
He fled after attacking him and turned on Tuesday.
The police said the incident took place in the village of Chaudeshwari Hala in Shorapur Taluk District, almost 500 km from Bengaluru.
The woman who had died and her husband worked as a daily wage laborer.
According to the police, Gangappa suddenly appeared outside the woman’s house on Monday night when she stepped out to go to the bathroom.
When he opposed his progress, Gangappa turned angry and tried to attack him sexually.
When he offered a stiff resistance, Gangappa took gasoline from the parked bike, burning it, pushing it to the bathroom and shot from the outside.
Hearing his wife shouted for help, her husband ran to the bathroom and rushed to the Taluk hospital before shifting it to a government hospital in Kalaburagi – about 108 km from Shorapur – where he died the next morning.
The sources of the police said that the woman, in a dying declaration, had identified the man who tried to attack him sexually as a gangappa.
The defendant was arrested and will now be charged with murder.
Maintaining the woman’s body, family members protested outside the hospital looking for justice.
The police arrived at the scene and calmed them down.
