Athens: Strong earthquake jerked Greek Island Crete, three weeks after another till killed a man on the island and damaged hundreds of buildings.
The Geodinamic Institute in Athens said the earthquake that hit the Tuesday morning had a magnitude of 6.3 and occurred at 12:24: 2.M.
Local time (9:24 a.m..
GMT) down the east coast of the island.
Magnitude 4.1 and 4.5 earthquakes believed as aftershocks lasted a few minutes later, the Institute said.
There are no direct reports of serious damage or injury.
Authorities said the police and fire crew checked the building in East Crete for damage.
The earthquake was felt on the Greek islands to the east of Crete, including Karpathos, Kassos and Rhodes.
“The earthquake was felt across the island, and it raised concern because we still felt aftershocks from the previous earthquake,” Regional Regional Governor of Crete, Yiannis Leondarakis, told the radio managed by Greece.
Hundreds of people from the villages in the south of the largest city on the island, Heraklion, remained homeless after an earthquake measuring 5.8 which attacked on September 27.
Leondararis said Tuesday’s earthquake, “Fortunately, there seems to be no serious damage even though it is a strong event and occurs at a shallow depth.”
