Coimbatore: Food security officials in the district are on our way to print a new Guinness world record by collecting 55 tons of used cooking oil for recycling in a month.
Presently, the record was held by a municipality in Sao Paulo in Brazil who collected 50,501 liters using cooking oil for recycling in a month in 2019.
Minister of Health MA Subramanian inaugurated an initiative of an event held at the College PSGrishnammal for women here on the day Wednesday, when attempts to record kickstares 55 tons of used cooking.
Oil will be collected in a month starting today (Wednesday) to be sent for recycling.
He said reuse cooking oil is dangerous practice, because it can cause various health problems.
This effort was made under a used cooking oil scheme (RUCO), which aims to destroy used oil from the system, by collecting the same from mass users such as hotels and snack units.
Food Security Officer District Dr K Tamilselvan said they had completed the application process to set new records.
“We have identified 315 bulk oil users in the district.
We have collected 32.13 tons of used cooking oil after the launch of the RUCO scheme in this district.
