Guwahati: Assam witnessed a 79% increase in the case of Puja Durga road accident compared to last year as the state government stimulates mostly for this year’s celebration.
According to the State ‘108 Mrityjoy Emergency Response’, a total of 541 road accident cases where 387 involved two-wheeled vehicles, attended by emergency response services during the festival celebration from Monday to Friday.
There were 36% of the decline in road accident cases last year compared to 2019 because strict restrictions were imposed in the Covid-19 situation view.
The state has recorded 301 road accident cases last year, while a total of 472 cases were reported in 2019.
Dhurjyoti Prasad Bhattacharya, a spokesman for emergency response services, said, “The maximum case was reported from Kamrup District followed by Golaghat, Sonitpur and Tinsukia.

However, Guwahati recorded only eight road accidents during the Puja celebration, which was only four years ago.
“A total of 49 road accident cases were reported from Kumbrup Regency this year, 48 in Golaghat and 32 in the Sonitpur District and Tinsukia District.
Bhattacharya said the highest number of cases was attended by emergency response services on the Mahanavami day from Durga Puja.
A total of 137 cases were recorded on Thursday (Mahanavami), 120 on Wednesday (Maha Astami), 110 on Friday (Vijya Dashami), 94 on Tuesday (Maha Saptami) and 80 on Monday (Maha Sasshi).
“The number of road accident cases remained slightly low last year due to strict government restrictions.
But this time, the government stimulates restrictions and people also come out,” added Bhattacharya.
He said letting a pillion riding and reducing night hours of night was two main reasons that had increased this year’s road accident.
The country is currently under seven hours at night from 10pm to 5 in the morning.
