Vellalore Tank is a new city butterfly hotspot

Coimbatore: If you are a butterfly lover, there is a surprise waiting for you at Vellalore Tank.
During the census program and butterfly orientation for children, 40 butterfly species are seen in the tank on Saturday only.
In the past, 21 other butterfly species were seen in the tank, which was a significant ecological place.
At least 30 children are involved in the census held by nature and butterflies (TNB).
The census was held on plantations raised by Kovai Kovai Kovai Kovai Padhukapppu Amaippu, a voluntary organization that worked to recover wetlands in the district, in the Bund Tank.
The six members of the TNBS members led by their president, Pavendhan has created awareness among children in the life cycle of butterflies and their significance in the ecosystem, before taking it for a survey.

Spreading at 90 hectares, Vellalore Tank was dry land for several years, before receiving water in 2017 after the joint efforts of Corporation, NGOs and District Administration.
As part of the restoration of the tank, Miyawaki Forest was raised in the Bund for almost 100 meters with 8,000 trees 270 species, including 60 herbal plants and flowering.
“This creates a conducive ecosystem for butterflies to develop,” said R Manikandan, Coordinator, Kovai Kilalangal Padhukappu AmaiPPU.
He said they planned to have a monthly butterfly survey in the tank.
“This will help document the butterfly species found in the tank and school students can learn about them.” Pavendan, meanwhile, said the bund long tank is the advantage of growing vegetation and ecosystems must have more than 100 butterfly species.
