Kolkata: With more than 10 lakh vaccinations on Monday, Bengal inched through Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh became the third in this country in the ongoing vaccination drive.
Bengal is now behind Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra with a total number of vaccinations on Monday night standing at 6.7 crores, several lakh more than Gujarat.
Along with Kolkata, several other districts, including 24 North Pargana, Darjeeling and Kalimpong, has been vaccinated between 70% and 80% of their populations that meet the requirements with at least one dose.
With urban areas that are quite covered with the first dose, health officials will now more emphasis on rural areas to expand the coverage of inoculation.
On Monday, more than 74 lakh jab was given in Kolkata, where more than 47 lakh was the first dose recipient.
The adult population that meets the requirements in Kolkata is pegged at 55 lakh-60 lakh.

“Now demand in urban areas is mostly a second dose.
When we expand our drive in rural areas, the demand will be the first dose,” said Ashim Das Malakar, a state family welfare official.
The country aims to manage 1.7 doses of crore in October, of which around 94 doses of lakh have been given.
Overall, around 70% of adult populations that meet the state requirements have got the first JAD so far.
