The Indian Technology Institute (IIT) Kanpur recently announced an alternative route to enter the Institute.
Students who will qualify for globally recognized Olympics in various subjects, including physics, chemistry, mathematics, and informatics, will be eligible to apply directly to the Institute.
However, the final decision on the acceptance of these students lies in the respective departments and the Senate Institute.
Need to change
Nitin Saxena, Chairperson, Ugarc (Bachelor of Academic Program Review Committee), IIT Kanpur, said that students who qualified for the International Olympics have proven their abilities and do not require additional checks in the IIT-JEE exam form.
“Every year, six Indian students represent the nation at the Olympics recognized globally.
They underwent a strict preparation process to pass various Olympics held by the government,” he said.

Unfortunately, the majority decided to pursue their higher education at the Institutes abroad.
“This framework has been put in place to try and retain this extraordinary talent,” he added.
The right framework
Students who qualify for the Olympics can apply to their special subject department.
“The right framework regarding reception or disqualification of their nominations to their respective departments.
The department can decide to hold a screening test – the process has not been decided.
Based on their decision, the candidate application will be forwarded to the Senate Institute, which will take the last call on the candidate application, “Add Saxena.
The Institute has just introduced an alternative mechanism based on the main agreement, said Saxena.
“There is no guarantee of the admission of this candidate.
Many steps will be applied to ensure that only the most qualified candidates enter the Institute through this route,” he added.
Exam preparation
Partha Halder, Head of Department, (Chemistry) and Academic Chief (Fiitjee Group), said that at present, there is minimal awareness of the Olympics among students and parents.
“We filter candidates who come to prepare for IIT-JEE and introduce the best from Lot for the Golyciads,” he said.
Because the Olympics are niche tests, many students don’t even consider the idea to try it.
“So far, the Olympics are only about prestige qualifications for the exam, because this is not a mass level exam.
Getting a direct entrance ticket into several Top Nation Engineering Institutions through the Olympics is still a foreign concept for many people,” Halder added.
Parents also tend to confuse local Olympics with tests held by the government.
“We have a long journey before the Olympic concept becomes famous among students and parents,” Halder added.
Similar concepts elsewhere
IIT Bombay has introduced a similar concept to enter the 2018 Institute.
Avinash Mahajan, Dean (Academic Program), Iit Bombay, said, “Candidates who qualified for the International Mathematics Olympiad meet the requirements to submit a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics Program.
The Institute has allocated Six seats for each student.
However, the final receipt depends on the filtering process, the decision post will be taken by the respective departments and finally, the Institute’s Senate.

Explain the reasons behind introducing concepts solely for mathematics students, said Mahajan, “in general, mathematics students decided from the beginning that this would be the area of their chosen specialty.
With the Olympiad route, we gave them the choice to stay focused by not having to prepare Another subject to appear in the IIT-Jee exam.

Since 2018, this Institute has taken several acceptances based on the Olympic route, told Mahajan.
