Mangaluru: Acceptance at the state-run PU college has surged the academic year in Dakshina Kannada District mainly due to two reasons: policy of all government promotions for SSLC students, and a financial crisis induced by a pandemic at home.
Data showed 54 government universities in the district had received an additional 2,661 acceptance from the previous year which saw a total of 5,401 reception.
Even some students who enroll in universities assisted and without aid last year, have migrated to government universities for the second PU.
Dakshina Kannada has a total of 54 PU colleges, 42 aided and 116 universities without assistance (private).
Vanitha Devadiga, Principal, Government of PU College, Montepadavu, said the receipt was more than double, up from 75 to 167.
Three students, who had previously studied in private universities, had joined the state-run universities for the second year.
“In addition to the policy of all promotions, parents cannot afford to pay fees in private universities.
Costs in universities managed by state-managed countries are much lower and the quality of teaching increases.
Most of the universities also have good facilities such as laboratories,” Devadiga said.
Receipts mainly increase in universities located in cities and cities.
Pramila Jessy Crasta, Principal, Government PU College for girls, Mukrampady, puture Taluk, said they only saw 10 additional receipts compared to last year.
“Parents told us that they were unable to pay fees in universities assisted and without assistance which was why they chose government universities,” Crasta said.
“Three students from private colleges have planned to shift to our place, but they cannot be as the transfer date has expired.” On the contrary, the assisted PU colleges have seen only 920 additional receipts.
Last year, colleges had a total of 11,155 students (currently in the second year), while the reception to the first PU this year has risen slightly to 12,075.
PU colleges without personal assistance see 13,835 acceptance this year, compared to last year 12,628 (up only 1,207 students).
