Mumbai: Five people have been arrested for allegedly trying to sell a 10-day-old baby for Rs 2.5 lakh at Navi Mumbai, police said on Tuesday.
Based on the tip-off, NRI police arrested allegations, including three women, who came to sell babies near the Nerul train station on Sunday, a official said.
The defendant, Anita Anand Sashte (47), Zareena Raheem Sheikh (33), Shubham Anand Sashte (24), Shahrukh Khursheed Khan (26) and Jyoti Shahrukh Khan (28), was a resident of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane, he said.
Zareena is a baby mother, while Sashtes acts as an agent who tries to mediate the agreement, he said, adding that woman, who should have bought the baby, approaching the police with complaints.
Cases have been registered with the trio for human trafficking and other relevant parts of the IPC and Juvenile Justice Law, the official said.
