Geneva: The World Health Organization said the omicron variant of Coronavirus could change the direction of the pandemic.
This asks the state to vaccinate as soon as possible and keep steps to protect people from infection.
“We can prevent Omicron to become a global crisis,” said Director General of Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at the briefing on Wednesday.
“This virus changes, but our collective determination should not be.” The organization also said while there was initial evidence that Omicron was lighter than Delta’s tension, too early to be definitive.
“Certain features of Omicron, including the global deployment and a large number of mutations, shows it can have a big impact on the path of pandemic,” said Tedros.
Asked about the new study of Pfizer Inc.
And Bionech SE about how their vaccines work against Omicron, Kate O’Brien, director of immunization and vaccine, say who is conscious and will see the findings.
“We are still in Delta’s pandemic, so vaccinations with existing vaccines continue to be a top priority,” he said.
Previously on Wednesday, Pfizer and Bionech said the initial laboratory studies showed the third dose of their vaccines may be needed to neutralize the omicron variant, analysis that would speed up the booster-shot drive throughout the world.
WHO has encouraged countries to delay booster to make more vaccines available for poor countries where the level of inoculation is low.
But the government may be less likely if the evidence of the test continues to show that the third shot is needed to protect against Omicron.
The variant has now spread to 57 countries, and it seems more transmitting from the previous virus strain.
Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHO emergency program, said that Omicron seems to have a higher transmission than Delta, “it does not mean the virus is unstoppable.”
