Bhubaneswar: Doctors at the Institute of Medical Sciences and Sum Hospital, Faculty of Medicine Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA) here, recently did a very complicated case of cavernoma brain stem and myoclonic epilepsy.
The patient, Anil Mahanandia (28) from Jharsuguda, suffered from a serious illness over the past 22 years.
After surgery, he was dismissed from the hospital on Friday.
The hospital claims that operation is one of its kind in India.
“This is a rare disease and we have done this rare operation in patients successfully.
If the operation is not carried out, it can cause brain bleeding,” said Ashok Kumar Mahapatra, Deputy Chancellor SOA and Nurosurgeon.
He said patients were experiencing frequent and trembling hiccups other than abnormal body movements that affect the face, tongue, stomach and thighs with a frequency of more than 30 per minute.
He can’t eat, sleep or stand up.
He could not get relief after being treated in several hospitals in the state and outside, said Chancellor.
“After he came to the hospital, Senior Nerves Surjyaprakash S Choudhury found that patients suffered from myoclonic epilepsy.
Further investigation revealed that Mahanand had a deep tumor in the brain (cavernoma worms) which was a rare condition and needed operations that were too complicated and risky.
However , a team led by Neurosurgeon Atmaranjan Das conducted a seven-hour length operation on November 26 to remove the tumor, “he said.
According to research publications, said the watershed, this operation was the seventh case like that in the world and first in India.
Surgery is not tried anywhere in this country to overcome such cases before, he added.
The day after surgery, said the watershed, the patient was completely free from hiccup and could walk.
“He got a new rental of life.
In fact, he walked out of the hospital when he was dismissed,” he added.
Expensive surgery is done free of any fees because patients are borne under the scheme of Swasthya Biju Kalyan Yojana State Government.
