Colombo: Former Captain Sri Lanka Mahela Jayawene will be a national team consultant coach starting next year, the country’s cricket council announced on Monday.
Jayawardene was appointed for the latest role by the Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) in consultation with the Board Technical Advisory Committee.
In a new role that is effective for a period of one year, Indian coach Mumbai Jayawardene will be responsible for the overall cricket issues from the national team and will provide strategic support to the players and management teams in the high performance center.
“We are very pleased that Mahela joins the national team for the expanded role, especially given the context that Sri Lanka has a severe international calendar during 2022,” said CEO of Cricket Sri Lanka Ashley de Silva.
“Mahela’s contribution during the first round of the T20 World Cup Men became very valuable for the performance of our team as a whole at the Conclusion,” added De Silva.
Apart from the new promise, Jayawardene will continue his role with the Under-19 team for preparing for the ICC U-19 World Cup next year to be held in West Indies.
“This is a pleasant opportunity to work with Cricketers and national coaches in various our development teams, including U19 and team teams, to help us do justice against talents and potential big crickets in Sri Lanka,” Jayawardene said.
“I am very excited about Sri Lankan cricket and believes that with coordinated and focused team efforts, taking a holistic approach that works in all age groups, we can achieve consistent success in the future,” he added.
He said his main role would support the national coach team and support staff in terms of preparation and strategic thinking during the coming year.
