Chennai: A 72-year-old man died after sneaking and falling in his sleep from the bed over the express train to Chennai on Sunday night.
The Government Railway Team (GRP), which examined the body at Tambaram Station, found his glasses broken and blood around the left ear.
The deceased, Narayanan from Karaikudi, is part of a group of 20-member pilgrimage to a temple in Vadakara in Kerala and plans to start from a temple in Mannady (Parry) Chennai.
The group boarded a master coach at Siambu Express (Sengottai to Chennai Egmore) on Saturday.
After dinner, Narayanan took the bed up.
He was believed to have slipped and fell to the coach floor in Marimalai Nagar, but the others in the group failed to pay attention to him immediately.
After 10 minutes, some people found him lying on the bloody floor of the ear.
The co-passenger tried to help him, because he was unconscious.
Authorities are warned.
At Tambaram Station, the train health staff who reached the compartment stated the nariahanan dead.
Tambaram GRP enrolled the case and sent the body to the GH chromepet for postmortem.
The doctor there told police they found blood around the left ear and that a piece of damaged glasses might have stabbed it.
He had taken off the glasses and put it in his pocket on the left side of his shirt, police said.
The police said he was given a place anchored 57 (lower), but sleeping in bed 60 (top).
“We suspected he could swap the chair with someone and slept on the bed up from where he sneaked as he fell asleep,” said an inquiry officer.
