Udupi: Local fishermen have noticed a nesting site of turtles near the lighthouse on Kodi Beach in Kundapur on Saturday.
After this, the Forestry Department with NGO support and locals, monitored the place, and the coverage had been built in place.
Kundapur DCF Ashish Reddy tells the Toi that nesting has begun, and is expected to continue until the end of January.
The Ministry of Forestry will monitor the sites of nesting all the time.
The local fisherman and NGO community will be part of conservation efforts such as last year, he said.
Last year too, the nest was considered since mid-December.
“It is important to keep the sites nested that the coastal cleansing appears.
Beach cleaning activities seem to have a positive impact, and the locals have joined hands in conservation efforts.
Last year, because of coordinated efforts, we saw an increase in the number of nests,” he said.
Santhosh Kodi, a math teacher who works at Morarji Desai Housing School, Bramhavar, and volunteers from coastal cleaning activities from the Kundapura Clean project, saying that like last year, it was Babu Magavera’s fishermen who first saw the nesting site near the lighthouse.
.
“We suspect there are around 80 to 100 eggs on the site.
Last year, from 11 hatching places, around 250 hatches made it to the sea.
The weather conditions played spoilsport, and many eggs were destroyed.
We hope this season we can see more Longers back to the sea , “he said.
In the first in-situ conservation campaign in the situation taken last year, the overall hatching rate was around 50-60% of around 11 nesting sites.
The reason for a bad hatcher can be a woman who has put eggs is not completely cooked, and all the eggs may not be fully fertilized.
In addition, because the tide, the nest is wet, and some eggs have fungal infections.
NGOs, including Indian FSL and the Clean Kundapura project have handened hands in conservation efforts.
