Tokyo: More than 100 domestic flights in Japan are based on Sundays because of thick snow in the northern and western part of the country, said the two biggest Japanese airlines.
Ana Holdings has stopped 77 flights at 1pm (0400 GMT), affecting around 5,100 passengers, Yutaka Kitahara, the company’s operations director.
“When the weather situation in northeast Japan remains unstable, there may be more cancellation that will come,” Kitahara said.
Japan Airlines Co has canceled 35 flights at 10 am (0100 GMT), affecting 1,810 passengers, representatives with the airline operation division.
Worldwide, thousands of flights have been canceled during Christmas weekends due to the rapid spread of the new Omicron Coronavirus variant.
Japan, which tightened border control to fight threats from Omicron, has reported only about a dozen cases of the spread of the new variant community and 231 total omicron infections, including health arrivals, according to the Ministry of Health.
