Chennai: Sales of liquor on New Year’s Eve in the state fell 12 crores when compared to the day according to the previous year.
According to the source of Tasmac, alcohol which was marketed through state-owned outlets produced 147.7 crore income on Friday against 160 Crores taken on the same day in 2020.
This, the Chennai region consisting of the city, Chengalpet, Kancheepuram and the Tiruvalur district contributed 28 %.
This is the second decline in sales during New Year’s Eve after 2020.
Restrictions considering the Omicron outbreak was quoted as the main reason for a decrease in sales figures on Friday.
Chennai Zone witnessed the highest sales of 41.4 crore in the state followed by the Madurai region at 27.4 crores, said sources.
The sale of liquor in the coimbatore zone, Salem and Trichy ranged from 25.4 crores up to 26.8 crores.
The seller sold in the Chennai area is around 8.5 crores when compared to the same in 2020.
Other regions recorded a marginal decline.
Beer sales reported 5.6% fell and IMFL around 1.7% compared to the previous year’s sales figures, said source.
EVE sales new year is equivalent to weekend sales per day which ranges from 145 crores and 150 crores.
“The restriction of the vehicle movement on December 31 as part of the Covid protocol is one reason for reduction in sales.
The usual beer sales in high demand register a significant decline during New Year’s Eve,” said a Tasmac official.
