Increasing the surface of the lake due to rain before time in November and December is one reason for a few birds take refuge in the lagoon.
Some migration birds prefer to fly to the nearest agricultural land because the surface of the water in the lake continues to increase due to prolonged rain, said Lakan Kumar Mishra, assistant forest conservator, Chilika Wildlife Division.
The census has revealed the highest number of 1,72,255 northern plintants seen on the lake followed by Gadwall (1.53, 985) and Eurasia Wingeon (1, 50,840).
The larger number of flamingos has increased from 71 years ago to more than 2000 this year, said the source.
The increase in the flamingoes population was caused by recovery of mud and weed infestations at the bird sanctuary, Mishra said.
Most winged guests arrive from outside the Himalayas, Kaspian, Siberia, Kazakh, Lake, and remote areas and Russian areas and neighboring countries.
