Coimbatore: Students and Alumni of Ramanathapuram Higher Medium Corporation School protests on the school field on Sunday against the construction of an overhead tank under the 24/7 drinking water supply project.
The protesters gathered on the ground around 10 am and lifted the slogans, urged City Corporation and the District Administration to spend the land.
A police team reached the place and told the protesters to leave the place because the meeting was not permitted because of a pandemic.
But more students joined protest and refused to leave the place.
Some students climbed trees and refused to go down when the police insisted.
They finally climbed when Coimbatore North Mla Amman K Arjunan asked them to do it.
“But the DMK government decided to build it on the school field,” he said.
“Students will be left without a playground if this project is done here.
If the authorities do not immediately stop the work, all 10 MLA in the district will protest here,” he said.
Balalasundaramoorthy, a former school student, who regulated the protest, said the tank would occupy a quarter of the land.
“This is one of the three main reasons in the city.
Apart from students, young people in the area also use it.
We will be left without a playground if taken over.
We have submitted a petition to the Coimbatore collector a few weeks ago.
We will intensify protests if The work was not immediately stopped, “he said.
